'Umar gathers his strength, and we continue our last stretch of the walk, towards yet another parking lot on Tzahal Boulevard (IDF boulevard). We stop there, in the sun. This one is just sand; a loading truck is parked on one side, and an assortment of trees frame it from the other.
Umar explains: “You are standing here at the site of a mass grave.”
Many of Lydd’s inhabitants have testified that under this parking lot lies a mass grave for some of those killed by the Palmach soldiers in the July 1948 massacres. The municipality refuses to allow Lydd’s remaining residents to mark the site, even to commemorate publicly.
